Apologies about the terrible joke (worse, worser and worsest). Now with that out of the way, we can talk about why we are here: German Würste.
German sausages?
This isn’t some sort of fetish when I say I love German sausages. I just love them. From the more common Frankfurter to the more “obscure” Mettwurst (raw pork sausage (yep, raw pork, I kid you not (triple bracket sets! Yay! My English teacher will have a fit seeing this))).

At this point in time I feel that I should get some sponsorship from both Lidl and Aldi (both North and South).
My obsession with German sausages was a direct result of my better half @danielaberlin. She introduced the concept of Abendbrot to me and I never looked back. Interestingly enough, you can buy sausages in German butchers in slices which are more like ham than sausages.

The varieties in the butchers are astounding – I never knew there are so many sausage types! To name a few of my favourites:
- Blutwurst: blood sausage. Probably one of my all time favourites from Germany.
- Garlic sausage and Bierwurst: what can I say… garlicky, savoury, amazing.
- Leberkäse: Literally translates to liver cheese however it’s anything but. It is more like a meaty meatloaf. Super tasty and I think the only thing is for you to try it yourself. You can literally go into just about any butchers or bakeries in Baveria and get a hot slice of Leberkäse in a bread roll (Brötchen) and they’ll make one for you on the spot as a street food.
- Weisswurst: “white sausage”. Eaten with sweet mustard.
- Fleischwurst (or Lyoner): Erm, it’s just a type of sausage. I personally love it warmed up and with some mild German mustard
- Frikadellen: it’s like a super tasty and super sized Swedish meatball. Yum yum.
Where do I get these?
A lot of the German style sausages are now widely available without having have to go to a specialist shop. If you are blessed with having a Lidl or Aldi near you then you should be spoiled for choice. From what we have seen, Frikadellen, Blackforest ham and garlic sausage are available just about everywhere in the UK and Ireland. In Europe you have a lot more options available. During “Alpine Week” you get a lot more choices such as Leberwurst, Bierwurst, Weisswurst etc. Unfortunately in recent years Fleischwurst seems to have disappeared from the shelves and my complaint to Lidl UK went unheard 🙁
We’ve also found various European Delis or Polish stores generally stock sausages very much similar to the German sausages I mentioned above. Try your luck!
Sausage of the month: Frikadellen

Frikadellen is something we usually have in our fridge. It is tasty, everyone likes it and it is super flexible. Eat it cold, eat it hot. Be decadent and eat it by itself, cut it into half thickness-wise and have on bread or stripes and in a wrap. We even cut them into small cubes and put them into fried rice!
What is your favourite sausage German or of other origin? Which one should we try next? We are off to Malaysia next then New Zealand after. Is there any you can recommend? Please leave me a message below.
