Seasoning and properly caring for a wok is essential to maintain its non-stick surface and ensure its longevity. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

  1. Cleaning and preparation: Before seasoning your wok for the first time, give it a thorough cleaning with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft sponge. Scrub away any factory residues or coatings. Rinse it well and dry it completely.
  2. Heat the wok: Place your clean, dry wok on the stovetop over low heat. Allow the wok to heat gradually for a few minutes. This helps to open up the pores of the metal.
  3. Add oil: Once the wok is heated, add a thin layer of high smoke point oil such as vegetable oil or peanut oil. Use a paper towel or a heat-resistant brush to evenly coat the entire interior surface of the wok, including the sides. Be careful as the wok will be hot.
  4. Heat and swirl the oil: Increase the heat to medium and let the oil heat up until it just starts to smoke. Swirl the oil around the wok, ensuring it coats every part of the interior surface. Continue swirling the oil for 10 to 15 minutes. This helps to polymerize the oil, creating a non-stick surface.
  5. Cool and wipe: Turn off the heat and allow the wok to cool down completely. Once cool, discard the excess oil and wipe the interior surface with a paper towel to remove any excess residue or buildup.
  6. Repeat the seasoning process: To enhance the wok’s non-stick qualities, repeat steps 3 to 5 at least two to three more times. Each time you season the wok, the non-stick coating will improve.
  7. After each use: After cooking with the wok, gently wash it with warm water and a soft sponge, avoiding abrasive cleaners. If needed, use a small amount of dish soap. Rinse well and dry it thoroughly to prevent rusting.
  8. Storage: Store the wok in a dry place to prevent moisture buildup. You can also lightly coat the interior surface with a thin layer of oil before storing to further protect it.

Remember, the more you cook with your wok, the better the seasoning will become. With time and proper care your wok will become your most reliable tool in the kitchen.
